Ten top tips for making the most of BETT 2018

BETT is one of the largest edtech trade shows in the world and, with nearly 1000 exhibitors and around 35,000 attendees, it can feel overwhelming. We’ve pooled our knowledge about the show and gathered our top tips to help you make your visit to BETT 2018 more manageable and productive.

1. Pre-register

Avoid wasting time queuing on the day – pre-register and print your ticket in advance.


2. Pick your day carefully

BETT runs from Wednesday to Saturday. The busiest day by far is Friday. If possible, plan to attend on either Wednesday or Saturday. Both days are quieter and you will have more time and space to browse the stands and speak with suppliers.


3. Plan your visit

Have a focus for your visit. Are you interested in VR? Do you need more printers? Know what you want to research and choose a few suppliers to visit to compare and contrast. The BETT site has a great filtering feature that allows you to pick out suppliers by sector, subject and product.  New for 2018 on the  BETT website is the visitor zone – helping you navigate all that the show has to offer in one place.


4. Download the app

The BETT app is a really handy way of planning your day and navigating the show. It’s available now for download on both android and ios.


5. Comfy shoes and snacks

Your day will be long and tiring. ExCeL is situated within a 100-acre site in Royal Victoria Dock, the main exhibition space covers more than 41,000 square metres and walking from one end of the venue to the other can take a long time. So, wear comfy shoes, take a bottle of water and pack some snacks. There are lots of places to buy food but the queues can be long and the food is expensive. So save yourself the bother and pack a sandwich.


6. Check out the seminars

It’s worth spending a bit of time pre-visit picking out one or two seminars of interest. BETT offers a huge number of sessions and these, combined with the free sessions provided by the suppliers, can be rather overwhelming. So, choose your seminars in advance and plan strategically as they also provide a chance for a bit of downtime in your day.  Here are a few recommendations to get you started:

Stephen Heppell leads this session which focuses on teacher workload and the opportunities that technology brings to improve productivity and ensure that ‘exhaustion is not the future’ for the profession.


7. Ask for help

There are information stations in the main entrance to the building.  If you need help finding a stand or have any questions about the show then head for these.  It could save you a lot of time.


8. Avoid the freebies

There is no such thing as a free lunch and this definitely applies at BETT. Most suppliers will be giving away pens, mugs, sweets etc. However, in return they want your contact details. So, unless you want to be inundated with sales calls in early February, be discerning and choose those freebies with care.


9. Use social media

Keep track of the trending topics and people.  BETT has a facebook and twitter account.  Use the hashtag #BETT2018 and get involved or just keep abreast of the hot topics of the day. Don’t forget to follow us @LdnCLC – we’ll be tweeting useful info from around the show.

10. Come and see us

As London CLC has been shortlisted for a BETT award this year, we thought it was about time we actually exhibited. Summer primary school computing conference

This event will build upon the Autumn computing conference by inviting subject leaders to reflect on their year in the role, sharing their successes and challenges. It will also introduce new ideas, tools and approaches through talks and practical activities led by members of the CLC team, with opportunities for attendees to share their own expertise and experience. Over the course of the conference activities will touch on the three main areas of the computing curriculum: computer science, digital literacy and information technology. We will also feature advice and examples illustrating the use of technology to support blended learning.

Combining forces for the first time, the Connected Learning Centre and More Than Robots have created a session for teachers, youth organisations, researchers and policymakers interested in the digital provision of creative arts for primary aged pupils.

This interactive and inclusive meet up will include inspiring examples of how technology can be used to support learning in music, visual art and drama in person and online at home drawing on our experiences as Tate Exchange associates and our partnership work with a range of cultural institutions.

This informal event is an opportunity to discuss real examples of what does/doesn’t work, meet colleagues from other sectors working on similar challenges and share useful research, news or updates

The morning will include case study presentations (details below) followed by a Q&A. There will also be an opportunity for a rapid sharing round for launches, project updates or requests for help and a short break to avoid zoom brain drain.

The News Project

Special project in collaboration with First News Education

For a third year, building on two successful previous projects, we are once again partnering with the children’s newspaper First News, fellow member of the national Making Sense of Media and News Literacy networks. This special project with a literacy, PSHE and citizenship, as well as computing focus, highlights our specialist interest in this important aspect of digital and critical literacy.

The News Project will enable participating classes from year 5 to immerse themselves in news and current affairs using First News and the Bett award-winning First News iHUB, which will be provided free of charge during the school-based part of the project over a six week period. Under the guidance of their teacher, pupils will be supported in their development as a community of fully informed news readers. Classes will test their new critical skills and knowledge in the culminating virtual celebration event which will include a news competition and team-based critical literacy and editorial activities. After the event, schools will be able to use the resources from the day in their school.

The project will launch with an introductory CPD session for teachers to set the context, demonstrate resources and to plan for the school-based activities. 

Initial CPD session - Thursday 21st October 4pm-5.00pm. 

Project work undertaken in school - October and November.

Special event - Thursday 25th November 9.30am-2.45pm.

The Garden Museum

The CLC is once again partnering with the Garden Museum to offer a partnership project for KS1 pupils (primarily suited to Yr2). Located next to Lambeth Palace on the bank of the Thames, the museum has an inspiring collection that provides the ideal stimulus for young learners to explore the world around them.

Pupils will use technology alongside the museum’s collection to explore the wonderful world of seeds.

  • How are they planted?
  • How do they spread?
  • What is inside them?

 The Garden Museum has a large collection of seeds and tools that pupils will engage with.

These half-day sessions will take place at the Garden Museum.

There is a limited number of dates available, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
